My Random Tuesday is about one random thing this week instead of several different things because I don't want you guys to be distracted. I need your full attention on this one subject because I really need some feedback. If you are just itching for some more randomness, then head on over to Keely's.
The results go from most dirty to least dirty.
1. Kitchen Sponge
2. Money
3. Light Switch
4. Computer Keyboard
5. Toilet Seat
6. Cell Phone
7. Shopping Cart
8. Hotel Remote
I've seen some gnarly bills working at a bank before, so I thought that the money would be #1 by far! They said that the amount of microorganism colonies found on the sponge were so much that it was impossible to even count!
Enter me, freaking out! I knew that those suckers were bacteria hoarders, but to have a sponge be dirtier than all of those things on the list has really got me rattled. They didn't specify how old that sponge was that they tested. I really wish they would have so I can know if changing them out weekly like I do is enough. I'm tempted to go to Costco and by a gazillion sponges so I can change them out everyday.
I want to know what you guys use. Do you use a sponge or a scrubbing brush to clean your pots and pans and things that aren't dishwasher safe? How often do you replace them? Or do you use some other kind of gadget that I don't know about?! Please enlighten me and tell me what the cleanest option is!

I use a scrubbing brush, and I clearly don't replace it often enough... but after reading this post I am going to get a new one STAT!
A dishwasher....
I also just have microfiber dish towels. I don't use sponges except for toilet cleaning and they go right into the trash after the first use. I'm a germaphobe and it's much easier to toss a dirty towel into the washing machine with scalding hot temps and bleach/soap than to suffer the paranoia of a sponge :O)
Our dishwasher is a POS so I always end up sponging the dishes off before putting them in there. I kind of got the feeling that sponges were foul, so I switch ours out like every two or three weeks. Now I am thinking I might do it more often.
I don't use sponges either. Dish clothes that you can throw in the washer with a bit of javex at the end of the day.
Sponges are gross...no matter how many times you use a new one.
Yuck.. I guess I wont be brinking water from the sponge anymore. :)

i use a sponge on dishes before they go into the dishwasher, but then i use the sanitize cycle, so i would hope that's killing the germys. i don't use a sponge on the countertops or anything...i trade them out like once a week, maybe two weeks if i don't use it much.
i have heard that microwaving your sponge kills the bacteria. i have no idea is this is true or not though.
Gross, gross, gross!
I use sponges, but need to find something else. Ick.
Btw, Hubs is looking for the best deal on P90x. It's going to be our Valentine's Day present to each other. Happy Valentines' Day, to my chubby spouse is what that probably says. But, we don't care!
I actually use both. I use the scrub brush to scrub out the pots and pans with a little Bon Ami— where the sponge is used for the other dishes with dish detergent. If I had a dishwasher (other than myself) I would probably use that.
I seriously haveeeeeeee germaphobia... I have my Lysol wipes and I am wiping EVERYTHING!! hahaha... and now I am going to be even worse! No sponges for me!
I'm in huge freaking trouble then, because I have tons of sponges laying around the house and who knows how old they are or how much bacteria has been building the nicest bacteria house EVER on them. I might have a whole subdivisions of McBacteriaMansions on my sponges. Gross. I'm going home and throwing them all out.
I tried to use dishtowels but they were so pretty and nice that I hated to get them all nasty.
I don't use sponges. I use microfiber clothes too. And I wash them in hot water with bleach. Another germ freak in da house.
I have the little brush that holds soap with the sponge attached to it. But I don't wash my dishes with it, I just use it to "clean" the plate before I put it into the dish washer. If I am going to wash dishes without putting it into the dishwasher, I have a microfiber rag that I use. It dries super fast!
yeah, i don't even really use sponges much but throw them out every two weeks. they're so disgusting! and anything in a hotel room grosses me out...especially the remote.
I hope other people read this:
You can microwave your sponge. It will kill all of the germs.
Rinse it in hot water and put it in a bowl and microwave it for 45 seconds.
For a partial clean, put the sponge on the bottom of your dishwasher when you run it. The hot hot water disinfects your dishes, right?
I use a dish cloth and replace it every 2 weeks! Gross!
I believe the shopping cart thing. I always seem to get sick a couple days after grocery shopping. Today I used a Lysol wipe on the cart before I used it!
I love that show. Now, I need to get off here and start throwing out some sponges.
Okay that just grossed me out! I'm thinking of ditching the sponges now for dish cloths that I can change out daily. In fact, I'm going to throw the sponge out tonight before it gets used again!
I just replaced my sponge. It was 6 months old. I'm sure that is nasty but I'm still alive.
I toss them in the dishwasher every couple of days and get rid of them probably on a monthly basis.
We're not dead yet so...maybe we're building up some mad bacteria resistance.
I use a sponge all the time...and I try not to think about the GROSSNESS that they hold! LOL! Good luck!!

I use sponges but they gross me out like crazy. I change them out a lot because they start to smell like mildew despite my efforts to keep this from happening.
BTW - so proud of you for your kickass p90x results. you are such a force to be reckoned with!

The ever-present "to sponge or not to sponge" question. My grandmother NEVER used a sponge in her house, always papertowels, for the same reason. I grew up hugging trees and felt bad about all the wasted paper, so I started using sponges...but have since heard HORRIBLE things about sponges...so, we've switched to dish brushes just to rinse stuff off before it goes into the dishwasher. Even though I was sticking the sponge in the dishwasher every other day, I am still uber-paranoid about it. I don't think there are enough sponges at Costco to combat the problem.
Those Mythbusters guys really change a girl's perspective, don't they?? Also? I sort of have a little mini non-sexual crush on Jamie.
My mother told me about sponges ages ago, and that's why I will only use them for cleaning things like walls and stuff. Kind of pointless results when they don't tell you how old the sponge they tested was, though - you're right.
I use dish cloths and just throw them in the wash. I have a drawer in my kitchen which holds the cloths along with my dish towels. Ixnay on the ongespay.
I use a sponge but only keep it for a week. I get a ton at Costco that last me a few months.
Sponges are gross. I also heard that you can microwave them to kill the bacteria. I think I am going to do that from now on to be less wasteful.
actually almost every night when i run the dishwasher i throw the sponge in the dishwasher with the rest of the dishes. either that or just throw em in the wash with towels etc. but ew nasty!
